What Cosmetic Dentistry Can (And Can't) Do

Patients often arrive with a screenshot and a single request — usually whitening or veneers — when a different treatment would serve them better. Here is an honest map of what each cosmetic option actually changes.

Colour: Whitening Works, Within Limits

Professional whitening reliably lifts yellow and age-related staining by several shades in one visit. What it can't do: change the colour of crowns, fillings, or veneers, or fix patchy white spots from fluorosis — those need bonding or veneers instead. A shade assessment first saves disappointment later.

Shape: Bonding For Small Fixes, Veneers For Big Ones

Chips, small gaps, and uneven edges respond beautifully to composite bonding — a single painless visit, no drilling. But bonding stains over time and suits front teeth best. For dramatic reshaping, deep discolouration, or a full smile redesign, porcelain veneers last far longer and reflect light like real enamel.

Position: Straighten Before You Perfect

No veneer can substitute for alignment done properly. Severely crowded teeth veneered without straightening first end up bulky and hard to clean. We often recommend a short course of aligners before cosmetic finishing — the result looks better and lasts longer.

The Preview Rule

Whatever you choose, insist on seeing it first. Our digital previews and trial mock-ups let you approve shape and shade before anything irreversible happens. If a clinic won't show you the result in advance, walk away.
